Too many authors struggle to be remembered. Are you one of them?
You poured months, maybe years, into your book. You finished the manuscript and held the printed copy in your hands. Then the excitement faded, because the part you pictured never arrived: the speaking invitations, the consulting inquiries, the recognition. The book showed up. The impact didn't.
You are not alone. Many accomplished authors land right here, watching a book they are proud of sit on a shelf while their business stays exactly where it was.
Here's the truth I want you to sit with: your book rarely has a sales problem. It has a shelf problem. The content is strong, and the credibility is real, but nothing is carrying it to the people who would hire you, book you, or partner with you because of it. It's not underselling. It's under-seen. And you cannot fix that by writing a better book.
Most authors get stuck because they chase Stage 4 and Stage 5 problems — podcasts, media, speaking — before Stage 3, Positioning, is clear. Until a reader can say in one sentence what your book means and who it's for, no amount of visibility will convert.
Try this: finish the line, "My book is the book for the person who is struggling with ___." If you can't finish it cleanly, your positioning needs work before anything else does.
Too many authors focus on the transaction: one copy, one stranger. It feels cold, and it rarely builds momentum. I teach the opposite — relationship marketing — treating every reader as a potential client, referral, or partner rather than a sale. People are tired of being a number in a funnel. Your book, positioned well, is the front door to a real conversation, and the move from reader to client becomes a natural next step instead of a hard sell.
That's the whole shift, and it's the reason I do what I do: I help nonfiction authors find their hive, become visible, and turn their book into a business asset. That's the BEES Book Marketing Method at work —Brand and Expand to find your hive and get seen, Engage to build relationships that last, and Scale to turn the book into a reliable source of clients and opportunities.
I worked with a husband-and-wife team running several books and businesses together. Their books and calendars held untapped assets; what they lacked was a way to decide what to pursue. We got clear on positioning first, then used that clarity as a filter for every project. That opened a new audience segment sitting right in front of them — home offices — a natural extension of their work, not a replacement for it. The return didn't come from selling more copies. It came from what the book opened, and from finally having a way to choose.
I'm teaching the entire approach in my free masterclass, One Book—a Lifetime of Clients.
