Happiness Raises Your Marketing IQ
Forget the sweatpants. And the bunny slippers. If you want to feel productive and creative, it is time for you to dress the part.
Put on Your Marketing Hat
Putting on a hat that inspires you can wake you up and start your imagination flowing. Did you know you can change your mindset by changing your clothes? When you are feeling down or discouraged, jumpstart your brain from the outside in. Have a bit of fun. Wearing clothing that makes you feel your best can put you in the right frame of mind to get things done.
I love hats. I have quite a collection. Hats shipped me from a place of discouragement into a playful and creative space. Hats and other clothing are like pen names. I take on the persona of a successful and adept marketing maven whenever I put on my marketing hat.
I have a pin that belonged to my mother. That small piece of jewelry has the power to make me feel protected, strong, safe. If I am going to a presentation and want an extra shot of confidence, I wear that pin.
Pick something you where whether it is a hat, scarf, vest or some other talisman to get you dressed and in a successful book marketing mood. It can work magic.
Dress the Part
Perhaps I forgot to mention that I was fighting with exhaustion when I woke up today. I have been busy all month, without a break in the action. The past week went from manageable to being filled up with unexpected client meetings on top of planned projects. Working on these videos is demanding. My brain is processing and learning new tricks every day. Our brains use 20% of our body’s energy.
Even with a good night sleep, I was having a hard time revving up for the day, and further contributing to my malaise, the weather was cold and damp. California sunshine was nowhere in sight.
I put on a warm and comfy outfit, best suited for a yoga class or laying about. Then I discovered that this choice of clothing was signaling my body to rest and relax. Loungewear = lounge brain!
The impact of this outfit was the opposite of what I intended. When I changed clothes and put on something I love, it was like the spotlight was on me. I warmed up my energy. Wearing something that makes me feel good about myself helps me wake up and get moving. It is an outward sign that I am ready to be out in the world.
I wondered if this was an isolated incident, or if other people were affected in the same way. I got busy doing a few minutes of research on the topic of how to overcome a feeling of exhaustion.

I decided to share what I learned about charging my batteries with you.
- Color can boost your creativity
- Clothing can help or hurt your self-image
- Changing your clothes can change your mood for the better
- Save those sweatpants for the gym, not the office
I work from home. I manage myself, including when I start and end my workday. Unless there is an emergency, I get dressed before I walk into my office. The entrance to my place of business is only a few steps away from the rest of my house. When I am dressed for work and I enter my physical space, I take on my professional persona and, I get more done.
I started by looking for information on how to overcome exhaustion. This quickly led me to articles, videos, including TEDx Talks on the subject. I also discovered that happiness is influenced by what we wear. And, these results are measurable by scientists.

Put on Your Marketing Hat
I can’t take all the credit for the hat idea. I have a good friend, author of two books, tons of television commercials, ad copy, and fiction, who has hats she puts on when she wants to get her muse dialed in for writing. It is fun to get dressed up, as an imaginative child, and many of us adults will tell you.
